The melting point is 4℃, the boiling point is 90.3℃, the flash point is 21.7℃ (open) and 16.7℃ (closed) (Chemicalbook). The refractive index (nd20Chemicalbook) is 1.3687. It is flammable and non-toxic. It can be mixed with almost all organic solvents in any proportion, and is slightly soluble in water. It can be used as a methylating agent. Compared with other methylating agents, such as iodomethane and dimethyl sulfate, dimethyl carbonate has less toxicity and can be biodegraded.

The molecular structure of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is unique (CH3O-CO-OCH3), containing carbonyl, methyl, methoxy and carbamino-methoxy groups.
